Philadelphia Guide for Visitors
There are several reasons why the city is called, “The City of Brotherly Love”. Of course, Philadelphia is taken from the Greek words, philos and adelphos which roughly translate to brotherly love. But in addition, you can find some of the friendliest and loving people in the city. With a population of 1,526,006, you’ll easily find Philadelphians that are willing to show you around.
But of course, you can’t really depend on the locals to show you a great time. After all, they do have lives to live. This is why it’s your responsibility to make sure that you and your family will have fun. This Philadelphia guide will show you how.
The Birthplace of America
Most people consider Philadelphia as the birthplace of America. If you want to teach your kids about our nation’s history, there’s no better place to go to than Philadelphia. You can check out the national historical sites that played a part in the founding of the United States. Head over to the Independence National Historical Park and check out the Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.
The city has the most number of public arts in America.
Thanks to the Percent for Art ordinance, the city received an initial boost of 200 public arts. The city then continued to work on the beautification of the city through art. In Philadelphia, graffiti is not a nuisance. It’s a regulated art performed by talented artists. All in all, there are about 1,700 public arts as estimated by the Fairmount Park Art Association.
In addition, there are also several art museums like the Philadelphia Museum of Art which is one of the largest museums in the US. While you’re there, make sure to check out the statue of “Rocky”. Visitors can expect to be art lovers after a short visit to these museums.
The city is a sports-loving city.
Philadelphia is one of only 12 cities that have teams in the four major sporting leagues. So it’s safe to say that Philadelphians are born to love sports. They are proud fans who are passionate about the sports. It’s not that hard to be passionate especially with the past successes of their teams. There are a lot of games and leagues that you can check out. In fact, a complete Philadelphia guide can be written just for the city’s sports alone. But whatever you do, don’t mention the “Curse of Billy Penn”.
Is it always sunny in Philadelphia?
Contrary to the popular TV show’s title, it’s not always sunny in Philadelphia. There are around eight to twelve wet days per month on average. If you want to visit during a dry month, come in October. Although early fall and even late winter months are generally dry as well.
Have a Philly cheesesteak.
